Flake food too big for fishies?

My platies can seem to eat big pieces of flake i have to break them into small pieces too feed them , only the swordtails mouth is slightly bigger then the platies . I wonder how neon tetra / guppy eats flake >< and if i dont break it to pieces they will just let it sink around .
