I need help with a Narrative Writing piece?

I have to do this for school: Write a short story describing Siddhartha Gautama's journey to enlightenment. Okay so i get what i have to write about, but what does narrative writing really mean? Do i like say "I" in the writing and pretend I'm being him? Or do i say "He did blah blah blah and blah blah then blah blah" PLEASE HELP =)
