Certainly power corrupts, but fear of loss of power makes leaders react badly to dissent, the possibility of a coup, separatist movements and challenges to their power. I don't know much about Indian politics, but what about Indira Ghandi's election fraud and her suspension of the constitution when an Indian high court ordered her to relinquish her office. What about her treatment of the Sikhs.
